Cruise Details:
Towering 14m above the waters of Lake Taupo, the Maori Rock Carvings have become one of the biggest tourist attractions in the North Island of New Zealand.

Taking 4 years to sculpt, the spectacular carving was completed in 1980 and has been visited by hundreds of thousands of people since. The lead carver, Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, led a team of 4 artists, who, wearing nothing but safety goggles and speedos, carved out the rock alcove at Mine Bay to create the carvings.

2 smaller figures of Celtic design, which depict the south wind and a mermaid, have also been carved at the base of the rock face to represent the cultural diversity of New Zealand.
